DAVID FONSECA
4th of July | DOURO & PORTO STAGE
One of the most charismatic Portuguese artists, David Fonseca is inseparable from the band he sang, Silence 4. With their first album in 1998, “Silence Becomes It”, the group quickly achieved an unusual level of success, with two multi-platinum albums. In 2001, they went on their last tour, having suspended their activity until 2014, when they reunited to perform four special shows.
In 2003, David Fonseca began his solo career with “Sing Me Something New”, which quickly established him as a unique figure in musical creation. To date, he has released more than ten solo albums, the most recent being the album/film “Living Room Bohemian Apocalypse”. In terms of collective work, he has two projects reinventing the work of two pop culture icons – António Variações, with “Humanos”; and David Bowie, in early 2017, with “Bowie 70”.
His activity has also developed with a strong performance component on national and international stages, always surprising in terms of visual expression. His live performances are memorable for all who watch them, with the mix of various multimedia components, and his songs have long been representative of the most important music productions – “Someone That Cannot Love”, “Kiss Me, Oh Kiss Me”, “Superstars”, “Oh My Heart”, “U Know Who I Am”, “What Life Is For” and “Futuro Eu” are just some of the songs composed by David Fonseca that live in our imagination.

2003: Sing Me Something New
In 2003, David Fonseca released his first solo album, “Sing Me Something New”, in which he explored new facets as a composer and performer: he played practically all the instruments on this album, which premiered simultaneously on more than 150 radio stations across the country. The first single, “Someone That Cannot Love”, reached number 1 on the national airplay charts. To promote the album, David Fonseca performed concerts at 20 universities across the country, an unprecedented event in Portugal. The second song from the album, “The 80’s”, was chosen as the theme song for Vodafone’s campaign, leading to a highly successful tour across the country.
2004: Humanos
In 2004, David took part in the project Humanos, singing previously unreleased songs by António Variações alongside Manuela Azevedo and Camané. The success of the album culminated in three memorable shows at the Coliseums in Lisbon and Porto and a performance for 40,000 people at the Sudoeste festival.
2005-2006: Our Hearts Will Beat As One
In 2005, it was time for “Our Hearts Will Beat As One”. The result of a long writing season, 11 songs were chosen from the dozens of songs that surrounded the making of this album. The album reached number 1 in the national charts soon after its release and was considered by the media as the best pop album of the year. The singles taken from “Our Hearts Will Beat As One” quickly became emblematic songs in David Fonseca’s career: “Who Are U” topped the airplay charts throughout the summer of 2005; “Hold Still”, the ballad duet with Rita Redshoes, took him to London to record the video; “Our Hearts Will Beat As One”, the third single, was supported by one of the most successful music videos produced in Portugal, having topped the MTV audience preference chart and having been reinforced by the nomination for the 2006 MTV European Music Awards (a nomination that followed those already received in 2003 and 2005). The show based on this “Our Hearts Will Beat As One” had numerous performances throughout the country, including the 2006 Sudoeste Festival, as well as the unforgettable show held in Lisbon, in November of the same year, before a sold-out Aula Magna.
2007: Dreams In Colour
In July 2007, David Fonseca released the song “Superstars II”, the lead single from “Dreams In Colour”, his third original album. “Superstars II” was premiered online and supported by a music video designed and directed by the artist himself. The reaction could not have been better: the song reached the Top Ten of Airplay on national radio stations, as did “Kiss Me, Oh Kiss Me”, the third official single from the album. David Fonseca was named Artist of the Year by readers of Blitz magazine.
2008: Tour Dreams in Colour Live
2008 began with the continuation of the Dreams in Colour Live Tour, where David Fonseca performed in a series of sold-out venues throughout the country. As in 2007, he was once again invited to participate in the South By Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, where he presented his latest solo work, accompanied only by his guitar and a loop station. The tour culminated in April with a sold-out concert at the Coliseu dos Recreios. 2008 was also a year of commitment to internationalization. With the release of the album “Dreams in Colour” in Italy, Greece and Spain, and subsequent live performances in Athens for the launch concert of MTV Greece, in Milan with Gabriella Cilmi and One Republic, in his own name and as an opening act for the British band Keane in Madrid and Barcelona, he brought a new perspective to the European market. At the end of 2008, his first DVD was released - “12.04.08 COLISEU - DREAMS IN COLOUR LIVE”, a memento of an unforgettable night spent at the Coliseu dos Recreios in April, which went straight to 1st place and, a week after its release, received the Gold award. In addition to winning the Platinum Award for the first time with “Dreams In Colour”, David Fonseca saw two singles - “Superstars” and “Kiss Me, Oh Kiss Me” - reach 1st place in the National Airplay Chart and toured the entire country in the space of 1 year, appearing at the main festivals.
2009: Between Waves e The Amazing Cats Club
2009 é o ano de um novo trabalho de originais, novas canções, novos concertos... mas não sem que 2009 was the year of new original work, new songs, new concerts... but not before, in addition to shows in Portugal, he travelled for the third consecutive time to the South by Southwest Festival and returned to Spain for performances in Madrid (Sala Heineken), Barcelona (Bikini) and Terrassa (Faktoria D’Arts). In July, the release of “A Cry 4 Love”, the single in advance of the new album, confirmed an excellent return of David Fonseca: “Between Waves”, his 4th solo album, was released on 2nd November and would be the first album released by his label “The Castle of the Amazing Cats” and distributed by a multinational. This new work was composed and written entirely by David Fonseca, similar to what happened on his first solo album “Sing Me Something New”, marking the return to performance of practically all the instruments included on the album: electric and acoustic guitar, piano, drums, bass, synthesizers, percussion, among others. David Fonseca continues to innovate and has created an online community, based at www.davidfonseca.com, which he called “Amazing Cats Club” and which aims to bring together enthusiasts of David Fonseca’s artistic work with author editions outside the commercial circuit. Since its creation, David Fonseca has released 4 EPs of originals and rarities and a live DVD exclusively for this community.
2010-2011: Tour Between Waves
2010 began with a tour presenting “Between Waves” in auditoriums from north to south of the country and culminated in two major concerts in April: at the Lisbon Coliseum and the Porto Coliseum, both sold out. After touring the entire country, he returned to Spain, visiting Pontevedra, Santiago de Compostela, Madrid and Barcelona - thus confirming his international presence in Spain. Meanwhile, in December 2010, David Fonseca conceived the show “U Know Who I Am – one man, a thousand instruments and a Polaroid” based on the song “U Know Who I Am”, the third single to be taken from “Between Waves”. As the subtitle suggests, David was on stage accompanied only by his instruments and a camera. Surprise was an element present in all these performances: with variations in the line-ups from concert to concert, with the use of instruments that we are not used to seeing in David, with emblematic songs but also with the less played ones, with his own themes and those of others, with conversation and with silences, acoustic and electric, with music and with images. The Between Waves tour continued on the road with concerts throughout the country and beyond: David Fonseca performed for the first time in Brazil – at the prestigious Rock in Rio Festival, and also in São Paulo and at the Teatro Odisseia (Rio de Janeiro). He was also in Carballeira de Caldas de Reis – at the Cultura Quente Festival, and also in Cáceres, where he received the “Pop-Eye Artista Revelación Europeo” award.
2012-2014: Seasons - Rising : Falling
David Fonseca has reserved one of the greatest artistic challenges of his career for 2012 – telling us about a year of his life through songs. The result is “Seasons”, a work that is divided into two albums: “Rising”, the first volume, released on March 21st, and “Falling”, the second, on September 21st. “Seasons - Rising : Falling” is then complete, becoming the fifth album of David Fonseca's solo career, revealing to us an artist at his creative peak, deepening sounds that he had already addressed in his last albums, although never in such a striking way. If in “Seasons - Rising:” he reinforced this idea by integrating electronics and rock into his musical universe, with songs such as "What Life Is For" or "Armageddon"; in “Seasons - Falling”, David explores, like never before, the essence of songwriting, providing us with songs of unusual emotion, as witnessed by “All That I Wanted”, the first single from the second part of this musical adventure. Maintaining the partnership with Nelson Carvalho in production, David Fonseca had some new collaborations in these new songs, mandatory highlights in the story of “Seasons – Rising: Falling” - Luísa Sobral in “It Shall Pass” and the Brazilian Mallu Magalhães in the theme “Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday”. Also worth mentioning is the reunion with Mário Barreiros, an exceptional musician, long-time friend and producer of David Fonseca's first two solo albums, responsible for the drums on “At Your Door” and “Heartbroken”.
2015-2016: Futuro Eu
For the first time in his career, David Fonseca makes an album entirely in Portuguese. “Futuro Eu” is the first stone in a long list of singles and B-sides that are released with videos directed by the artist himself and that take the new show to more than 50 concerts in Portugal, Spain, Norway and Luxembourg. “Futuro Eu” debuts at number one on the sales charts and “Chama-me Que Eu Vou” wins the 2016 SPA Autores award for Best Popular Song. The year culminates with the release of “Futuro Eu – The Outtakes”, thus completing one of David Fonseca’s most creative and bold cycles.
2017: Bowie70
One year after David Bowie's death, David Fonseca has put together a tribute album to one of the greatest artists of all time featuring only Portuguese vocals. David Fonseca produces, records and plays all the instruments on the album, making it an extremely personal tribute. Bowie70 features the voices of singers with different styles, but manages to achieve a common thread that transforms the album into one of the phenomena of the year. Manuela Azevedo, Tiago Bettencourt, Afonso Rodrigues, Camané, Marta Ren, Márcia, Aurea, Rita Redshoes, Rui Reininho, António Zambujo, Ana Moura and Catarina Salinas give body to David Fonseca's interpretations and visit different phases of Bowie's musical life.
2018-2019: Radio Gemini
Conceived as if it were a radio program, the album “Radio Gemini” confirmed David Fonseca as one of the most prolific and inventive writers of pop songs. The first single “Oh My Heart” became an instant hit, with a music video directed by himself in various locations in Japan. The collaboration with Alice Wonder, a prominent Spanish artist, on the song “Resist” and the pop sophistication of “Slow Karma” and “Get Up” were also obvious highlights of an album that marked David’s career.
The tour that followed confirmed David Fonseca as one of the greatest Portuguese performers, with a performance at the Vilar de Mouros Festival being a highlight. In 2019, David Fonseca went on a theater tour with a new multimedia show concept he called “Closer” and which sold out every theater it went to.
2020-2021: Lost and Found
In the context of the pandemic, David Fonseca used this time to finally release the collection of B-sides and rarities that had accumulated over the years without an official release. “Lost and Found” – B-sides and Rarities” also premiered a song in Portuguese that had never been heard before, “Só Depois, Amanhã”. He released the single “It Feels Like Home” with Ana Sofia Martins and a collection of Christmas songs entitled “Christmas Songs Vol.1”.
2022-2023: Living Room Bohemian Apocalypse
During the pandemic, David Fonseca wrote and directed an album/film that would be called “Living Rom Bohemian Apocalypse”, an old project of David's that crosses two of his favorite areas, cinema and music. This one-hour, seven-song medium-length film, which premiered in cinemas in Lisbon and Porto, was the starting point for a new tour, supported by the release of the single “Chasing The Light”, a song with a strong radio presence.
