JOAO SÓ COM CAROLINA DE DEUS
E MÓNICA TEOTÓNIO

July 5th | DOURO & PORTO STAGE

João Só was born in Coimbra in 1988 and moved to Lisbon when he was nine years old. He listens to everything, but he makes a point of singing and composing in Portuguese. His influences range from the Beatles to GNR, including Oasis, Clã, U2, Sérgio Godinho, Tom Petty, Rui Veloso, Elliot Smith, Quarteto 1111, Los Hermanos, Elvis Costello and Jorge Palma. He started composing at the age of 15 and has never stopped since.

In January 2008, he joined Abandonados and recorded his debut album. In 2011, he released “Ela Só”, the album that made “Sorte Grande” known, a song later performed in partnership with Lúcia Moniz. A year earlier, he formed the duo “Mendes and João Só” with Miguel Araújo, and they released the EP “Não Entres Nesse Comboio Amor”.

In “Coração no Chão”, released in 2013, he delved deeper than ever into his Beatle vein and his fascination with the great songs of the 60s, of which he feels heir. Despite his youth, João Só is one of the most recognized and successful national singer-songwriters – “Sorte Grande”, “Até Ao Fim” and “É P’ra Ficar” are just a few examples.

In 2016, João Só was involved in two projects that seemed distant from each other but shared their creative skills – the partnership with Nuno Markl in the project “Dr. Paixão & Dr. Só”, in some way a sequel to Telebaladas, which was broadcast on Rádio Comercial, to the delight of all those who enjoyed the letters that João Só brought to life in the form of a song; the other, entitled “Deixem o Bullying Só!”, of a socio-pedagogical nature, which aims to alert school-age audiences to the phenomenon of bullying from its most varied perspectives – the victim, the aggressor, cyber-bullying and neutrality.

And in 2018 this “good rebel” returned, although this time not exactly with an original work, but with an album that brought new and not so new songs – a compilation that brings together the best songs by João Só, some new ones and even new reinterpretations of some of the old ones. 2019 was marked by the reissue of one of the songs included in “Coração no Chão” – “Mais Ninguém” – and the “Só 10 Anos” tour, which celebrated his 10-year career and took him to several stages in the country, such as Capitólio (Lisbon), TAGV (Coimbra), Casa da Música (Porto) and Theatro Circo (Braga), among others.

Também em 2019 apresentou um novo single, intitulado “Não Sou Eu”. 2020 trouxe três novos temas de João Só. In April, “Ficamos Cá Dentro” was presented, a song that refers to the need to enjoy life even during the storm, and which gained a new meaning at the time it was released, accompanied by a video made in virtual collaboration with family and friends. In June it was the turn of “Maldita a Hora”, a humorous song in a duet with Tiago Nogueira, from Os Quatro e Meia, whose video features illustrations by Nuno Markl. In September, the result of a partnership between João Só and the daddy blog “Duas Para Um” emerged, with the theme “Mil Vezes”, which expresses a father’s feelings about his son’s growth. “Quem Diria” was João Só’s first single released in 2021, in February. In June, on his birthday, he released “Primeira Pedra”, and in October “Olha Para Mim”. The three songs are included in the album “Nada É Pequeno No Amor”, released in October.

2021 ended with two concerts presenting “Nothing Is Small In Love”, at the Maria Matos Theater and at the Casa da Música, which featured Miguel Araújo, Tiago Nogueira, Nena and Miguel and João as guests.

In 2022, João Só released “E Não Só”, an EP of duets with some of his favorite female voices: Ana Bacalhau, Bárbara Tinoco, Carolina de Deus, Teresinha Landeiro, Mimi Froes and his sister Beni.

The project did not stop at digital platforms and, at the end of the year, the Casinos of Espinho and Estoril were packed to see and hear the EP's songs live, as well as other hits that have marked João Só's career.

In 2023, alongside the tour, with concerts all over the country, including his debut at the Cool Jazz Festival, João Só presented 4 new songs, including a duet with Nena - “Qualquer dia Queres Voltar”.

2024 is the year in which he celebrates 15 years of his career, and which also marks his debut on one of the most legendary stages in the country, the Coliseu dos Recreios. The concert, with a full house, took place on April 13th and featured Rui Veloso, Miguel Araújo, Os Quatro e Meia, Ana Bacalhau, Ana Mariano, Carolina de Deus, Nena, Mónica Teotónio and Beni as guests.
